YSU trio grab conference honors

BOARDMAN, Ohio - Three Youngstown State University Men's Hockey players have received College Hockey Mid-America honors for the season.

Freshman Mike Poljak (Bethel Park, Pa.) was named a first-team forward. Poljak led the CHMA in scoring and finished second in the nation with 74 points on 37 goals and 37 assists in 32 games.

"Mike has done everything a coach could ask of a player," Head Coach Rocky Russo said. "He is a leader on and off the ice and an excellent representative of the team and the university."

Freshmen Zak Kusek (Parma, Ohio) and Kevin Pawlos (Pittsburgh, Pa.) were both named to the second team as defensemen. Kusek scored 12 goals and 30 assists in 32 games for the Penguins.

Pawlos finished with 10 goals and 28 assists in 29 games for the Penguins.

"Zak and Kevin played a large role in the team's success this season," Russo said "They held the bulk of the ice time on the blue line and did a great job. As freshmen, they were both impressive in the game and in the classroom."

YSU, in their second year in the American Collegiate Hockey Association and their first at the Division I level, finished with a record of 16-16 under Russo.

"We are building something very special here," Russo said. "With so many freshmen making an impact this season, the sky is the limit for us in the future."
