Penguins Fall against Conference Rival Slippery Rock
Nov 13- The Youngstown State men's hockey took the ice Friday night looking for a huge victory against conference foe Slippery Rock Pride. The Penguins were looking forward to making up some ground in the College Hockey Mid-America standings but were stunned after a heart breaking third period goal.
The Penguins battled the Pride in the first period to a zero zero tie. As the second period started the Pride received goals from Bryan Szostak and Josh Herbert. A defensive let down let Josh Herbert to streak down the Ice for a breakaway that beat Senior goaltender Matthew Jacob. However, the Penguins continued to battle as their all freshman line of Mike Evans, Ryan Sidak and Nick Wolf continued to pressure the Slippery Rock defense. "They worked hard every shift and they really set the tempo for us." Said Coach Patterson. The hard work paid off as Mike Evans found the back of the net with one left in the second period.
The same intensity the Penguins had in the second period carried over into the third as they controlled most of the play. Junior forward Michael Stokar finally broke the deficit 8 minutes into the third as he capitalized on a golden opportunity in front of the Slippery Rock goaltender to make the score tied up at two. After a every even last five minutes of play where both squads exchanged opportunities Slippery Rock got the lucky bounce they we're looking for. A wide shot taken by the Slippery Rock defensemen Tom Svec took a crazy bounce off the boards back into the front of the net that deflected off the Penguin defender into the net with two minutes remaining. The Penguins were unable to come back as they lost their fourth straight conference game. "The bounce's have not been going our way recently, but that does not mean we get down on ourselves, we just have to keep playing like we are and things will turn around for us." Explained Penguin Coach Brad Patterson after their 3-2 Friday night defeat.
Youngstown State has seen their conference record fall too 1-3-0-1 and regular season record fall too 5-10-0-1. The Penguins are currently sitting 7th in the CHMA standings.
