Penguins Ride High-Flying Offense to Sweep of Bulldogs

BOARDMAN, OH - The Youngstown State University Men's Hockey Club racked up 10 goals in two games this weekend as they swept away the visiting Ferris State Bulldogs by scores of 6-5 and 4-3.

Penguins defenseman Alex Arnold was the offensive hero in Friday night's 6-5 win, scoring a natural hat trick (three straight goals) in the second and third as the Penguins rallied from deficits of 3-0 and 4-3. YSU captain Zak Kusek added four assists, including helpers on all three of Arnold's goals, to lead all scorers.

Goaltender Matt Jacob, playing in relief of starter Luc Radomski, turned away 43 Bulldog shots and was credited with the win.

On Saturday the two teams switched roles, as it was Youngstown State who charged out to an early lead then had to hold off a rally by Ferris State.

Assistant captain Naaman Moorman notched the lone goal of the first period, scoring with 6:31 left in the first. He would follow that score up with another tally just 31 seconds into the second period, but his bid to match Arnold's natural hat trick would be spoiled seven minutes later by YSU co-captain Mike Poljak as the Pens took a 3-0 lead.

After an FSU goal, forward Danny Trobenter notched the eventual game-winner at with 5:03 left in period number two. The Penguins then held off a furious third period comeback by the Bulldogs, who scored twice early in the third but could not muster enough offense for the equalizer.

Goalie John Snyder stopped 30 shots and picked up his first "W" of the year for YSU.

The series saw 54 minor penalties called between the two teams with the teams racking up a combined total of 118 penalty minutes over the course of 120 minutes of hockey. The Penguins made the most of their special teams opportunities, scoring a whopping seven power play goals on the weekend.

The Penguins return to action this weekend as they host #8 Ohio University at the Ice Zone on Friday night before heading to Wooster for the Battle of Ohio tournament where they'll face Bowling Green.
